September 11, 2001: In a series of coordinated terror attacks, al-Qaeda militants hijacked four American passenger airplanes and flew two of them straight into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. Another was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and one crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Overall, 2,996 people were killed.
