In 1967, Tennessee repealed the Butler Act of 1925 that made it unlawful for any educational institution “to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals.” The act, of course, was at the heart of the famed Scopes Trial.

In 1896, the Supreme Court of the United States decided Plessy v. Ferguson, affirming racial separation in public facilities. Fifty-eight years later, in 1954, the Court reversed Plessy in Brown v. Board of Education on May 17, 1954.

In 1862, Abraham Lincoln was nominated for President.
